Regardless of the industry you are working in, success in today’s highly competitive world does not come easily. It requires a lot of hard work, focus, resilience, and perseverance. Living with Covid-19 over the last 2 years has made it even more difficult for everyone. It’s important to note the following in order to do well in the tough business environment: 1. This is not the time to strive for perfectionism in most, but not all, industries as it actually does more harm than good. The time taken to make the last 10% of something perfect would usually take the same amount of time as the first 90%. It’s better to go ahead with whatever that’s 90% finished, and take some time to make minor changes as you go along. 2. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness as some may wrongly perceive. It’s a sign of courage and helps you to learn and improve yourself a lot faster. It’s better to ask than to try and reinvent the wheel. 3. Keep a totally open mind and accept alternative ways of doing things in driving your career or business forward. Always remember that no matter how smart or wise you are, there are always someone smarter and wiser in this world, so be prepared to compromise. 4. Always listen for ideas, important points, and central themes when communicating with others, and then decide what is good for you. Always judge content and not delivery. 5. Whenever possible, believe in the importance of working in a formal or informal team. Never relate your knowledge to your designation and position in the organisation, your academic background, or your social standing. The team concept is all about the willingness to let the best person in the team do specific areas of the work, and accepting his/her leadership for that portion of the work he/she is good at.
